St.Kitts Volcano Tour

The highest point of the entire Leeward Islands is the Mount Liamuiga which soars to 3,792 feet above sea level.

From Basseterre one takes a scenic drive along the island's main road to a quaint village on the north western end of the island.  One then turns inland on a rugged dirt road that leads to the base of the mountain.

The real climb now begins up the steep, slippery slopes to the rim of the volcanic crater.  The temperature gradually falls and the familiar sights and sounds are suspended and replaced by an eerie calm and the glorious symphony of nature’s ever changing sound track.   Crickets, toads, frogs, birds all join the choir.  The rustling wind bends the squeaking limbs – the mysterious – ah! what was that?

From the rim of the crater there are glorious views of the western side of the island and on a clear day as many as six islands can be seen offshore. Looking down into the crater one could imagine the days when magma erupted through its underground veins. Now its lush greenery is proof that Liamuiga, a native Kalinago (Carib) word meaning fertile land, is quite an appropriate name.

The descent is exhilarating as the thrill of having conquered the mountain fuels the legs and the force of gravity draws you back to lower lands.

The hike includes well located rest stops where hikers can be re-energized with light refreshments.
